Our Story

Born in a Sister’s Promise

Born in a promise between two sisters -- Nancy Brinker to her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36 – our vow to end breast cancer forever has become the promise of millions.

Since launching the breast cancer movement 25 years ago, we’ve transformed the culture – how the world talks about and treats this devastating disease and helping to turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast cancer survivors.

Today, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest and most progressive grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists – the only grassroots organization fighting to cure breast cancer at every stage, from the causes to the cures and the pain and anxiety of every moment in between.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure: The world’s largest and most progressive grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists.

Our Promise

Curing Breast Cancer – at Every Stage

At Susan G. Komen for the Cure, we know that ending breast cancer is about more than curing a medical condition – it’s about overcoming the cultural, social and financial conditions that prevent women from receiving life-saving breast health care and treatment.

At Komen for the Cure, our promise is our mission – ending breast cancer forever by . . .

  • Empowering people to take charge of their health care through awareness and early detection and, if diagnosed, to survive.
  • Ensuring quality of care for all, regardless of race, ethnic background, language, income or insurance status.
  • Energizing science to find the causes and cures of breast cancer – and, ultimately, to prevent breast cancer in the first place.

Our Promise: To save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all, and energizing science to find the cures.

Our Passion

Fighting Every Day for Every Life

Because 10 million women around the world could die from breast cancer in the next 25 years without the cure, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is fighting every minute of every day to save every life.

Because every woman is at risk for breast cancer – a disease that strikes at random and for which the causes and cures are still unknown – we know that every moment counts:

  • Without a cure, 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will continue to be diagnosed with breast cancer – a devastating disease with physical, emotional, psychological and financial pain that can last a lifetime.
  • Without a cure, an estimated 5 million Americans will be diagnosed with breast cancer – and more than 1 million could die – over the next 25 years.
  • Without a cure, an estimated 25 million women around the world will be diagnosed with breast cancer – and 10 million could die – over the next 25 years.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Because every moment matters.

Our People

The Face and Voice of Breast Cancer

Led by more than 100,000 survivors and activists, Komen is the world’s largest and most progressive grassroots network fighting to end breast cancer forever.

As the face and voice of the global breast cancer movement . . .

  • We are local activists in 124 cities and communities, mobilizing more than one million friends and neighbors every year through events like the Komen Race for the Cure Series – the world’s largest and most successful awareness and fundraising event for breast cancer.
  • We are advocates at the local, state and federal level, fighting for the screening and treatment programs that save lives and the research that brings us closer to the cure.
  • We are global citizens working with local health groups around the world and through our web site, komen.org, to help millions of women in nearly 200 countries overcome the social, cultural and economic barriers to breast health and treatment.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure. We started the breast cancer movement. We’ll finish it.

Our Work

Serving People, Saving Lives

  • Empowering people, ensuring quality care for all – From major cities to small towns and everywhere in between, Komen for the Cure serves the breast health and treatment needs of millions, especially underserved women, through education and support to thousands of community health organizations with grants to date of more than $480 million.
  • Energizing science – From the discovery of the key genes linked to breast cancer to the development of revolutionary treatments and therapies, Susan G. Komen for the Cure has supported virtually every major advance in breast cancer research over the past 25 years, with research investments to date of more than $300 million.

Komen . . . for every community.

Komen . . . for every cure.

Our Success

A Generation of Survivors

Susan G. Komen for the Cure has played a critical role in every major advance in the fight against breast cancer over the past 25 years – transforming how the world talks about and treats this disease and helping to turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast cancer survivors.

Among the victories since we started:

  • More early detection – nearly 75 percent of women over 40 years old now receive regular mammograms, the single most effective tool for detecting breast cancer early (in 1982, less than 30 percent received a clinical exam).
  • More hope – the five-year survival rate for breast cancer, when caught early before it spreads beyond the breast, is now 98 percent (compared to 74 percent in 1982).
  • More research – the federal government now devotes more than $[900] million each year to breast cancer research, treatment and prevention (compared to $[30] million in 1982).
  • More survivors – America’s 2.3 million breast cancers survivors, now the largest group of cancer survivors in the U.S., are a living testament to the power of society and science to save lives.

Our Pledge

Fulfilling the Promise, Finding the Cure

To fulfill our promise to end breast cancer forever, Susan G. Komen for the Cure aims to invest more than $1 billion over the next decade on breast health care and treatment for the underserved and on research to discover the causes of breast cancer and, ultimately, its cures.

Specifically, Komen for the Cure pledges to . . .

  • Invest more than $600 million in education and community health groups to ensure quality care for all and to help underserved women overcome the social, economic, cultural and language barriers to quality breast care and treatment.
  • Invest more than $400 million in innovative breast cancer research, with the goal of answering the most urgent questions in the fight against this disease – what causes breast cancer, how can it be cured, and, ultimately, how can it be prevented?
  • Mobilize more than 10 million neighbors and friends – through events like the Komen Race for the Cure Series – to energize and empower a new generation of women and their families in the fight against breast cancer.
  • Save Lives – our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends – through increased early detection and new treatments that spare future generations the pain of this disease.
